무작위로 정하는 방식은 단순히 편해서 쓰는 게 아닙니다. 고대 아테네에서는 상당수의 공직자를 선거가 아니라 추첨으로 뽑았습니다. 이를 추첨제(sortition)라 하는데, 선거가 말 잘하고 인맥 넓은 사람에게 유리하다고 보았기 때문입니다. 추첨은 누구에게도 유리하지 않다는 점에서 오히려 더 민주적이라고 여겨졌습니다.

Randomness isn't merely convenient. Ancient Athens filled many public offices not by election but by lot — a practice called sortition — on the grounds that elections favour the eloquent and well-connected. Selection by chance favours nobody, which was considered the more democratic arrangement.
